How to calculate your tarot birth cards
- Add your birth month, day and the two halves of your four-digit year.
- For a two-digit total, add its digits. For a three-digit total, add its first two digits as one number to its last digit. Reduce again if the result exceeds 21.
- Match the result to a Major Arcana combination below. A single-digit result takes its partner nine numbers higher. The special 19 result gives three cards: 19, 10 and 1.
Example: August 20, 1969
08 + 20 + 19 + 69 = 116
11 + 6 = 17 · The Star
1 + 7 = 8 · Strength

Three ways to work with your birth cards
- Notice your first response. Write down a word, question or connection. You do not need to agree with every traditional interpretation.
- Explore the relationship. Consider how the cards’ themes support or challenge each other. A pair can offer two useful viewpoints on the same question.
- Try something small. Use the learning sheet to choose a manageable action or a topic to journal about. Return later to see whether the exercise was useful.
Treat the result as a starting point for curiosity. Your choices, experiences and circumstances provide the context.
Tarot Birth Card Calculator questions
What are tarot birth cards?
Tarot birth cards connect a birth-date calculation to cards in the Major Arcana. You can use their symbolism for learning and reflection. Unlike a shuffled tarot draw, the same date and method give the same result.
Why do I have two birth cards, or sometimes three?
This method pairs a two-digit card number with its reduction. When the calculation reaches 19, it keeps the full sequence: The Sun, Wheel of Fortune and The Magician. The number of cards does not indicate how fortunate or special someone is.
Why do other calculators give different birth cards?
Methods can differ in how they group the year, reduce a three-digit sum or select a partner. Decks also vary in numbering. Compare the calculation steps and convention before comparing results.
Why is Strength 8 and Justice 11?
This tool uses the Rider–Waite–Smith numbering convention. Some other tarot decks swap these two numbers. The displayed names and Roman numerals make the chosen convention visible.
Can The Fool be one of my birth cards?
The Fool is numbered 0 and is not a result in this pair method. A total of 22 is reduced rather than treated as The Fool.
Should I worry about Death, The Devil or The Tower?
No. Here, Death is a prompt about transition, The Devil about patterns and choices, and The Tower about reconsidering assumptions. Receiving one of these cards does not predict illness, death or disaster, or say anything bad about you.
Do my birth cards change each year?
The result stays the same because your birth date stays the same. If you want to explore a theme for a selected calendar year, try our separate Personal Year Calculator.
Does the tool save my birth date or send it to AI?
The calculator code works in your browser. It does not send your entries to a server or AI service, save them in local storage or include them in the page URL. Normal website privacy and cookie settings still apply; see our Privacy Policy.
