Love and Career and a Successful Life

Balancing Love and Success

In popular culture there is a misconception that women can have success or love, but not both. In movies and in television women are often portrayed as career-driven go-getters with little to no knowledge of how to start or keep a romantic relationship going. Then, on the other hand, we see the women who are unfulfilled in their lives without a boyfriend or a husband.

The beauty of life is that there are many ways to live, and this is sometimes our downfall as well as our triumph. With so many options ahead of us we can struggle to find our own way through the world without relying on other people to tell us what will make us happy.

Successful people often find relationships to be difficult because they find it hard to be vulnerable with others. In our careers, we have to be tough and ruthless in order to get what we want and to take us where we want. In relationships, though, this translates to someone who is unwilling to open up to others, who has trouble trusting, and who struggles to compromise.

Life is all about balance and about learning to balance our lives in ways that allows us to be successful in our personal and professional lives. Just because we can be ruthless in the office doesn’t mean we can’t be open and honest with our partners when we get home.

Here are a few lessons we can all learn about being successful in our careers and in love:

  1. Practice vulnerability.

While you don’t want to seem vulnerable while closing an important business deal, you do want to make sure that you are able to cultivate a trusting relationship with your romantic partner. Being open and vulnerable in a relationship isn’t a sign of weakness; rather, it is a sign that you trust your partner and are willing to let them into your personal life in ways few others get to access. Sharing and expressing your emotions and feelings within a relationship can be very freeing and help strengthen your relationship with your partner.

2. Learn to accept help.

At work you might feel like you can’t ask for help without risking your position. At home, though, you should be able to accept help and support from your partner, family, and friends. Having a reliable support network makes you a better person and allows you needed space to rest and recover from your work life. Your partner will appreciate you asking for help, which lets them show you how much you mean to them as well.

3. Don’t stress if you aren’t in a relationship.

If you’ve been career focused, you might have found that your romantic life went to the wayside. If your professional life has stabilized and you’re ready to jump back into the dating pool, put your lists aside. It’s important to have an idea of what you’re looking for, but don’t worry about not having a serious relationship by a certain age, or not being married, or not meeting the right people immediately. Your life isn’t perfect, but that’s what makes it great!
